Summary
Knowing what to buy — and where to get it — can feel overwhelming, especially if you’re a new dog owner. Harnesses come in all shapes and sizes, treats are a mystery (“will they even like it?”), and don’t even get me started on toys — the choices are endless.
That’s where a good local pet shop really shines. Unlike shopping online, you get first-hand advice from people who know dogs. In this blog, I’m sharing why supporting independent pet shops matters, how they help me as a trainer, and a few of my favourite spots around Reading.
Whether it’s finding the perfect harness, a chew that promotes calmness, or getting honest support when you’re feeling unsure — these small businesses offer something truly special.
Why I Love Buying Local (Especially as a Trainer)
When I visit local pet shops, I have the pleasure of getting to know the people behind their small businesses — in the products they stock, the advice they give, and the relationships they build. These aren’t just transactions; they’re conversations.
Knowing what to recommend — and where — is so important. Helping clients is about more than just training their dog in a life skill. It’s about surrounding them with the best support. Some shops are key for specific items, like harness fittings, which can be incredibly confusing.
A good harness can be like wearing a bra for a woman – get it right and you’re in heaven; get it wrong and you’re fidgeting all day!
Here’s why I love having go-to recommendations to share with clients both online and in person. For specific support, these local stores are always my number one choice:
They ask questions – about fit, behaviour, routines, challenges — and they listen.
They avoid aversive equipment – focusing on kind, supportive tools that promote learning, not fear.
They build confidence – for both the human and the dog, which is exactly what I care about most.
What I Love to Pick Up Locally
If you ever see me browsing the shelves (which I love doing), or chatting to a staff member, I’m probably after one of these. I often borrow or test items first with clients — many local shops are happy for you to try before you buy.
Long-lasting chews (like pizzles, horns or ostrich) to promote calm.
Harnesses – for comfort, control - getting the fit just right!
Puzzle feeders and snuffle mats – brilliant for enrichment.
High-value treats – ideal for recall and reactivity training.
Kongs and soft tug toys – great for bonding and play.
The Pet Barn
Local Pet Shops I Recommend (& Why)
🐾 The Pet Barn – Sonning Common/Peppard Common
📍 RG9 5EU | ☎️ 0118 924 2747
The Pet Barn has been a go-to for several years, and I’m proud to say they’ve recommended clients my way too. They were top of my list when I sat down to write this.
When I popped in recently to say hello and share the blog idea, I asked Clare a couple of questions about what their regulars love:
Their top-selling natural chew? Biltong. Without missing a beat, Clare named it — long-lasting, non-greasy, and satisfying to chew. It’s ideal for dogs who need a calming outlet for their energy.
I also asked what advice she’d give a new dog owner. Her answer stuck with me:
“Train them early – if your dog feels confident, and you feel confident, everything else follows.”
Couldn’t agree more. Confidence on both ends of the lead.
🐾 Henley Pet Shop – Henley-on-Thames
📍 69 Bell Street, RG9 2BD | ☎️ 01491 576069
Another favourite of mine is Henley Pet Shop – a proper, family-run business that’s been helping pet owners for over 35 years.
They’re my go-to for the Perfect Fit Harness (which I highly rate for comfort and support). Tim, who now runs the shop after taking over from his dad in 1981, has an incredible understanding of harnesses, treats, and kit. His willingness to help clients navigate it all without overwhelm is what makes the shop so special.
A client recently said me they were:
“Fantastic – really helpful, with loads of advice for our new rescue.”
Their top sellers? Ostrich bones, closely followed by Kong knot toys – both great for enrichment and managing excitement. And again, they ask questions before they sell. That matters.
A Few Things I Love to Buy Local:
Long-lasting chews to help dogs relax (like biltong and ostrich)
Well-fitting harnesses like Perfect Fit
Puzzle feeders and snuffle mats
High-value treats and toys for recall and reactivity
And most importantly – expert advice from people who care
So this Saturday, instead of hopping online, consider popping into your local pet shop. Have a chat. Discover something new. And know that you’re not just supporting your dog — you’re backing your whole community.
